What do the IN and OUT labels refer to? The IN label refers to where the Outside Plant Cable is to be terminated. The OUT label refers to where the Customer Premise Environment Cable is to be terminated. What punch down tool do I use for 110 connector, 66 block, and BIX connectors? We recommend any industry standard tools. For example, the Avaya 788H1 is an acceptable 110 connector tool. The Siecor QTH38B tool is recommended for 66 block and central office bi-furcating pin blocks. The Nordx/CDT QTBIX16A tool is acceptable for BIX connections. How far from the demarcation point does the protector have to be installed? What is the maximum distance? As per NEC article 800.30, the protector should be mounted as close as possible to the point of entrance (where the cable enters the building). For one and two family dwellings, it is acceptable for the ground to run 6.0 m (20 ft). For buildings and structures, the protector shall be grounded within 1.5 m (5 ft) from its point of entrance to the building. Are there instances where protectors are not required between two buildings? Protectors are required at both ends of the cables between buildings as per NEC article 800.30 to provide protection from lightning strikes and accidental contact with power lines. There are three exceptions: 1. If the buildings are close enough together, and high enough to intercept lightning. 2. Interbuilding cable runs of 42 m (140 ft) or less, where the cable is direct buried, or in a metallic conduit where both ends of the cable sheath or conduit are bonded to each building's ground system. 3. Areas having an average of five or fewer thunderstorm days per year and earth resistivity of less than 100 ohm-meters (I.E. areas along the Pacific coast). Can Circa's protectors be mounted outside? Many of our protectors have moisture resistant connectors. Even so, they can only be installed outside if mounted inside a weatherproof enclosure. Station protectors are designed for outdoor use. Please refer to Station Protectors and Outdoor Cabinets. How do you properly wire a station protector? How does the "parallel" connection work? The station protector has two terminals and the ground lug. The ground system is connected to the ground lug, and the TIP IN and TIP OUT is connected to one terminal. The RING IN and RING OUT is connected to the second terminal. The idea is for the station protector to be mounted in parallel with the phone line. It is transparent until a surge is present. The station protector is electrically similar to a 5-Pin module, but the IN/OUT pins have been combined into one terminal. Consult the diagram below. ![]() |
